History of the Compact Track Loader
The compact track loader (CTL) evolved directly from the wheeled skid steer loader, which was invented in the late 1950s by Cyril and Louis Keller. While wheeled skid steers revolutionized material handling in tight spaces, their narrow tires frequently bogged down, rutted delicate turf, and lost traction on mud, sand, or steep slopes. Early operators tried to solve this by wrapping steel tracks over rubber tires, but these makeshift setups caused excessive machine wear and offered a notoriously rough ride.
The modern dedicated CTL was born in 1986 when Japanese equipment pioneer Takeuchi introduced the world's first dedicated rubber-tracked compact loader. Around the same time, companies like ASV developed specialized rubber-track undercarriages designed to spread machine weight evenly over soft terrain. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, major manufacturers like Bobcat, Caterpillar, John Deere, and Kubota launched their own purpose-built CTL models. Today, CTLs dominate the compact equipment market, featuring high-flow hydraulic systems, anti-vibration undercarriages, and enclosed climate-controlled cabs.
Uses Of a CTL
Soft-Terrain Earthmoving & Landscaping
Compact track loaders excel on soft, wet, or sensitive ground where wheeled machinery sinks or causes severe soil rutting. Because rubber tracks distribute machine weight across a broad footprint, CTLs operate at low ground pressure (often under 5 psi). This flotation allows operators to grade topsoil, clear brush, and prep lawns on muddy jobsites or residential landscapes without getting stuck or destroying the underlying surface.
High-Power Material Handling & Heavy Attachments
Thanks to their wide stance and low center of gravity, CTLs provide greater tipping capacities and pushing force than equivalent wheeled loaders. Equipped with high-flow auxiliary hydraulics, these machines run demanding work attachments like forestry mulchers, cold planers, trenchers, and rock saws. They are indispensable for site clearing, agricultural work, and transporting heavy pallets of stone or lumber across uneven terrain.
